The Yellow Canary Chemical Watch List

Deciphering ingredient labels is difficult. They are hard to read and the ingredients are not well known. Here is a list of ingredients that are either safe or unsafe and may help you decipher the ingredients in your products. This list is excerpted from "Kanariefåglarna ryter".

Acceptable preservativeas
Phenoxy ethanol, grapefuit seed extract, potassium sorbate, rosemary, scorbic acid and vitamins A, C and E.

Known risks
Benzyl acetate, butyl benzylphthalate*, butylated hydroxyanisole* (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), crystalline silica*, diaminophenol*, diethanolamine* (DEA), dioctyl adipate*, ethyl alcohol, fluoride, formaldehyde**, glutaral*, hydroquinone*, methylene chloride*, nitrophenylenediamine*, p-phenulenediamine (efter oxidering), phenyl-p-phenylenediamine*, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, pyrocatechol*, saccharin*, talc* och titaniium dioxide*.                                                              

Hidden risks
1,4 dioxane** in etoxylerated alcohol, for example PEG (polyethylene glycol), oleth, polysorbate and nonoxynol, arsenic** and lead* in paints made with coal tar colours, polyvinylacetate and PEG.

Crystalline silica in amorphous silicates
DDT, dieldrin, endrin and similar pesticides in lanoline and quaternium
Diethanolamin (DEA) in DEA-cocamide/lauramide condensates and quaternium
Ethylene oxide** in ethoxylated alcohols, inklusive PEG, oleth, polysorbate and nonoxynol
Ethylhexyacrylate in acrylate and methacrylate copolymers
Formaldehyde** in polyoxymethylene urea.

Precusrsors to formaldehyde**
Bronopol, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM-hydantoin, Imidazolidinylurea, metheneamine, sodium/hydroxymethylglycinate and quaternium-15.

Precursors to nitrosamine** - NDELA
Bromonitrodioxane, bronopol, diethanolamine (DEA), DEA-cocomide, DEA-lauramide, DEA-oleamide, DEA-MEA/acetame, DEA-sodium lauryl sulfate, metheneamine, morpholine, padimate-O, pyroglutamic acid, triethnolamine (TEA) and TEA-sodium lauryl sulfate.

Substances known to cause allergies
Aniline derivative tints, anisyl alcohol, balsam of Peru, benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, benzyl cinnamate, benzyl salicylate, cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamyl aldehydes, citral, citronellol, coumarin, d-limonene, ethyl methacrylate, eugenol, farnesol, formaldehyde, geraniol (synthetic), hydroxy-citronellal, isoeugenol, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, musks, oak moss and quaternium.

Sunscreen ingredient risks
Benzophenore-3, 4-MBC (4-methylbenyliden camphor), homosalate and 2-etylhexyl-4-dimethyl aminobenzoate (octyldimethyl-PABA).

Harmful ingredients in deoderant
Petrochemicals biproducts, formaldehyde, aluminium, parabens and all synthetic perfumes ie not etheric oils.

Harmful cosmetic ingredients
Most colours used in cosmetics are cancer risks eg D&C red 2, 3, 4, 10, 17 and 23; FD&C red 10 and blue 4 are all forbidden in USA and EU, but the following carcinogens can be found regularly in imported cosmetics:
